On the Island of Rugen we had fine stormy weather, fantastic girls and boys and two messages in a bottle. They were send two days earlier from Warnemünde (about 80km)and obviously "speed swam", drifted eastward with the storm to this coastline near Dranske. Amazing.
Warnemünde - information day about marine litter from various organisations - EUCC-D, NAJU, BUND, DJH, up cycling atelier, beached art
It is the weekend of the annual International Coastal Clean-up Day initiated by Ocean Conservancy. A worldwide day of action to clean up beaches and shores.
This year I am not going to organize a beach clean-up because I am invited to join a group of schoolchildren and the teacher who is doing this for years and years with his pupils on the island of Rugen in Germany. Fantastic!
On Saturday 10:00 there will be an information event at the lighthouse Warnemunde with different organisations working on the subject of marine litter. A beach clean-up starts at 14:00.
It is a mixture of ice cream sticks (western Germany), sun milk (eastern Germany), sand toys (both of them). Collected on an east German island called Rugen. Please to all of you on the beach - take all of your stuff back home. Have a nice day on the beach!
(And a lemon juice bottle bleached by the sun - fantastic finding)
An unusual amount of plastic bottles made us speculate that it may be recycling material that went overboard. And perhaps a special streaming washed them all together to this small part of the beach. Some bottles are not known here and there is a bottle with deposit system in Germany. ???
A mix of beach trash and marine litter.
Perfect weather a nice helping hand! Thanks Mr. Buhl!
It is time for the annual Ocean Initiatives organised by Surfrider Foundation. I will do a small beach clean-up on a new beach. We had a strong winter storm that flooded the dunes and left a lot of marine litter behind.
It is on the island of Ruegen at the north shore - Schaabe beach near Glowe.
Shame on you America on how you treat your First Nations. On how you show no RESPECT for holy sites, sacred land and mother earth. You should know by now that you can not eat - or drink - money! Shame on you Mr Trump!
within the north atlantic and north pacific gyres there are up to 200,000 pieces of plastic litter floating on every squarekilometre (seaeducationassociation)
the decomposition of today`s plastics takes up to 600 years -
60-80% of all plastic litter reaches the ocean through the rivers - 60% of debris items are disposable (oceanconservancy)
The debris for my collages I found on the beaches of Warnemünde at the Baltic Sea - one of Germany`s most cleaned up tourist resorts.
I would like to focus on the plastic problem all around us. Every time I walk on the beach I am at the same time fascinated and frightened about this side by side of nature and plastic. How the sea works on the debris and sometimes you don´t know what is what. The variety of beached items is immense and makes you wonder about their journey and the story behind.
My collages are about environmental awareness. It is so normal for us to be surrounded by plastic. I would like to sharpen the eye for this human footprints on the beach, in the ocean. Doing it with art is a nice way of learning.
For me it is very satisfying to combine the daily walk on the beach with a little cleanup and to recycle the plastic litter into art.
Hope you enjoy it!
